Algebra 1 Project: Researching a Famous Mathematician and creating a newspaper or brochure about that mathematician.

Three class periods are set aside in the library or computer lab - Tuesday March 31, Wednesday April 1 and Thursday April 2.

The final project is due in classTuesday April 7. You will lose 10 points per day for every day it is late.

On Monday March 30, you will draw the name of a mathematician in class.  Every student will research a different mathematician.

You will spend class on Tuesday researching in the library materials (encyclopedia, books) and online resources  for information about your mathematician.  If you cannot find enough information, you may choose to draw another name and continue with your research.

On Wednesday and Thursday you will create your newspaper or brochure.  You may e-mail it home or take it home on your own USB stick if your wish to work on it some more.

CONTENT AREAS REQUIRED:

  1. A name for the newspaper or a title for the brochure
  2. Place and date of birth / death (if deceased), places lived during lifetime
  3. Education
  4. Family Information
  5. One or more accomplishments / contributions to mathematics
  6. Photograph or illustration of mathematician
  7. A bibliography in corerct format with at least 3 resources

REMEMBER to document your resources.  Copying a website word for word is plagiarism !  You must rewrite information in your own words.

You may choose to create either a newspaper (4 pages) or a brochure (3-fold). All text you write must be typed.

The newspaper must be four pages and contain:
  • A newspaper name and picture of your mathematician
  • World or national news of the period in which your person lived.
  • An obituary if deceased.  Here is where you will provide most of the information about your mathematician - birth and death dates, family, early childhood, places lived, education. Look at death notices in newspapers to get ideas for content.
  •  If not deceased, then a birth notice and articles about the mathematician's family, early life, and education.
  • An Editorial/Opinion article about one or more contributions your mathematician made to the field of mathematics. Why is he/ she important?
  • For extra credit one or more of the following: a cartoon or comic strip related to the person's life, a puzzle such as a brain teaser or crossword or word serach, quotations by or about your mathematician.

The newspaper may be no more than 2 sheets of paper double-sided.

The brochure must be three-fold ( 6 columns) and contain:

  • A title and a picture of your mathematician
  • Information about his/her birth ( date, location, parents) and death if deceased (date, location, cause)
  • Information about his/her early childhood and family, places lived
  • Information about his/her education
  • A description of contributions to the field of mathematics
  • A timeline of where your person fits in history - what events were taking place during his/her lifetime.
  • For extra credit one or more of the following: a cartoon or comic strip related to the person's life, a puzzle such as a brain teaser or crossword or word serach, quotations by or about your mathematician.
